The Transforming Power of the Ally Relationship

Seventeen-year-old Kelli* joined FYI at the start of the 2025 fall semester after relocating to Santa Clarita to be closer to her sister. At the time, she was navigating significant challenges, including two prior arrests and active probation. Academically, she had struggled as well—her highest GPA in any previous term was a 1.67.

After joining FYI, Kelli was matched with an Ally who had recently retired and was able to dedicate meaningful time to building a strong, supportive relationship with her. At her January goal meeting, Kelli’s transformation was unmistakable. She arrived smiling, laughing, and clearly at ease alongside her Ally, who encouraged her to share her exciting updates. Kelli proudly shared that her case had been dismissed, she was no longer on probation, and the judge commended her for turning her life around and succeeding in school.

Her academic progress reflected that change—Kelli completed the fall semester with an impressive 3.5 GPA and is now eager to begin taking college courses. Beyond her academic and legal milestones, Kelli also shared one of her favorite parts of the experience: visiting her Ally’s elderly mother at her assisted living facility and playing Rummikub together—a simple joy that speaks volumes about the connection and community she has found.
